A Subtle Golden Distraction

(Gen 3:1a) Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made…

One thing the prince of the powers of the air has continued to do since the Garden of Eden is to package that which is wicked in very attractive ways. Well, he has done it once again. This time it is called The Golden Compass.
Christians more interested in being entertained than they are in filling their minds with truth will undoubtedly line up at the theatres this weekend to see what looks to be a spectacularly made movie. Unfortunately, though released for what the secular world likes to call “The Holidays” and what Christians like to call “Christmas”, the Golden Compass is anything but God friendly.
Over the past few weeks I have researched some articles on the author of the Golden Compass book, Phillip Pullman. From what I understand, he has written a trilogy of books. These books put down God and His Church and exalt witchcraft, humanism and atheism. In fact, it seems as though Pullman wanted to write a trilogy of books opposite to the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, who very obviously used Christian undertones in their works. What is his goal in all of this? Apparently to kill God in the minds of today’s youth. Children are even influenced into accepting a personal Daemon into their life. (Pronounced Demon) The movie will be toned down, but consider this: if the movie does well, children will want to pick up Pullman’s books. When they do this they will get the works of a man who obviously wants to program children into not believing in God.

(Mat 18:6) But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

So what can we do about it? Well, nothing. The movie will come out no matter what we say or do. Movie makers and authors have the same right to voice their opinions in America as Christians do to proclaim the gospel. That is not the problem at hand. The problem is that Christians are so often uninformed and will therefore send their children off to see this movie and unwittingly teach their children to disbelieve God and put no confidence in His authority.
I said that there is nothing we can do about it. What I meant is that there is nothing we can do to prevent the movie from being played. But we Christians must realize the harm this movie (and more particularly the books) could have on the minds of our children. We must not allow them to see it or support Pullman’s works in any way. We must educate our children in what Pullman is trying to do with this work, no matter how much they want to see it.

(Hos 4:6a) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge…

The movie looks great! It is obviously very well done! It looks as good as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil did to Eve. Despite God commanding her not to partake of that fruit, she did…and she died, her and Adam.
Phillip Pullman, you’re not getting my money. God has given me every penny, and every penny belongs to Him. You’re not getting my mind. God has given me a brain; I will exercise it with His word, not your wicked imagination. I do not have children, but if I did, Mr. Pullman, you wouldn’t get them either. They would be the Lord’s heritage and would belong to Him.

(Psa 53:1) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.

Sorry Mr. Pullman, but I guess that makes you a fool.

Christian, don’t you dare be fooled! Stay clear of the Golden Compass!

May God be with you all, amen.

Hey, Seth, I agree with the post. I wonder though if by talking about movies like this individually if we don't simply stir up the controversy and motivate even more people to go see it that otherwise would not have... I don't like that idea.

But, because of the kid-centered focus of this movie, we do need to make people aware of it. But at the same time, we need to remember that most movie makers and book authors in secular media are controlled by the prince of the power of the air, and they are not going to be bringing us a message of God's truth!

Keep standing, brother!

You're right, of course. Publicity is publicity. However, I'd rather people be informed so as to make an educated decision as to whether or not they wish to support such a movie. I fear many parents will just bring their children and regret it later. Also, keep in mind that this is being pushed by Scholastic Magazine which I did not write about. So children in the public school system will get amped about seeing this, and if parents think it is just another "Holiday" movie, they may think nothing of letting their child attend.

Thanks for being the first person to comment on a post...I feel honored Mr. Hinds.

God bless!
